How-To – If you followed the directions listed in our previous article GNOME3 and Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and you want to add some customization then look no further.
First lets start off by installing the gnome-tweak-tool.
Gnome Tweak Tool Installation:
If you installed gnome-shell by using the GNOME3 Team PPA:
sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool
After installing the Gnome Tweak Tool first think I did was change my fonts to match what I was using in Unity. The setup I used was:
Default Font: Ubuntu 8
Document Font: Ubuntu Light 8
Monospace Font: Ubuntu Light 9
Window Title Font: Ubuntu Bold 9
Next I went to the interface selection and changed my icon theme to Faenza. Which I personally like over any icon set I have found.
There are many other customization’s that can be completed by this tool so feel free to experiment.
I really liked the the default theme Adwaite but I didn’t like the solid black notification bar and I found a pack of 6 themes to install.
In order to install these themes you must install a theme manager, the one I went with is ThemeSelector.
Theme Selector Installation:
Once installed there will be a tab in the activities tab.
This is how to install:
cd
git clone http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions
cd gnome-shell-extensions
./autogen.sh –prefix=/usr –enable-extensions=user-theme
make && sudo make install
These set of commands will compile and enable GnomeShell user theme extension.
If you run into error’s compiling there is a workaround by converting an rpm to deb.
Next Step:
Download the Theme Selector Extension.
Extract the contents of the file.
Copy “extension.js” and “metadata.json” under the ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/themeselector@fpmurphy.com/ folder (if it doesn’t exist, create it).
Copy all the folders you’ve extracted to the ~/.themes/ folder(If you cannot see that folder listed in Nautilus hit CTRL+H)
Last restart gnome shell: ALT+F2 then type r and press enter.
Now you should have the themes tab under activities and select the theme you want by clicking on it.
