Android News

There have been many rumors floating around and one of them happens to be about Android 3.0 Gingerbread is going to be released this fall. I have searched high and low to find confirmation of this rumor to be true and have yet to find a reliable source only speculation.

Here is some of the speculation that is floating around the net.

  • Android 3.0 is going to be tailored to higher end devices such as the Droid X, Evo and Droid Incredible. "the OS will require a minimum of 1GHz and 512MB of RAM." I find this hard to believe, why deny the 100's of other phones a chance at greatness and leave it for the current big three.
  • A new 1280×760 resolution will be available for devices (such as the Droid X and EVO) with displays of 4” and larger. This makes sense, take advantage of the hardware.
  • The user interface is getting a complete overhaul, with the final product being comparable to the Gallery App on Nexus One. Animations will be light and smooth. - I will be interested to see what the new if any interface design Gingerbread will bring to the table.
  • Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. The first Gingerbread-running handsets would start shipping during the holiday season. - I do not see this happening but I have seen stranger things happen.

What do you think on the latest rumors circulating Android 3.0 Gingerbread, is there any truth?

With all that being said lets live in the present and talk about a cool feature being implemented in Google Chrome and Android 2.2 Froyo called Chrome to Phone.

Chrome to Phone does just what it sounds like. If you download an extension into Chrome, a single click can send your current browser, maps, directions, links, etc. to your phone. If you're browsing at home, and you have to run to a meeting, just clicking one button will send everything to your Android phone provided it has version 2.2 or newer on it. It can even send YouTube videos and phone numbers. Now thats some integration.

I could see in the future that Android Users maybe making the switch to Google Chrome just for this amazing feature.

The up coming release of Android 2.2 (FroYo) will be the first Android version to fully support Adobe's Flash platform according to The New York Times. Changes to the iPhone make it more difficult for developers to create apps and Google plans to cash in on that mistake. Although HTC Hero users have been able to experience flash support already, other devices have not had this luxury.

FroYo's Rumored Features

  • There is much buzz around the net that FroYo will have automatic updating
  • New API's that will allow better touch screen response
  • Increase in RAM due to the new 2.6.32 Linux Kernel

When HTC released the Hero last June, it was the first Android device to support Adobe's Flash. This was followed by an announcement that Adobe would unveil its first full fledged Flash multimedia player for smartphones which since then been put on delay. The halt was due to Adobe wanting to take advantage of some of Android 2.1 API's. As it stands currently Adobe is to release its flash platform in the first half of 2010.

The huge explosion of Android's popularity created a new problem for Google. The problem is that with the diversity of handset makers and Android platforms it is difficult to unify the OS. Google has developed a solution to the problem which should make end users quite happy. Google's solution will be accomplished with a two step approach.

According to Engadgets conversation with google:

  1. Google will simply stop developing new Android versions as fast as they have over the last year. (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1 were released in less than a year)
  2. Google plans to shift development to focus on applications. The latest applications bundled with the new OS updates will be available to older phones through the Android Market which will allow for bypassing handset makers and mobile carriers. (Which means no more waiting for your carrier and handset maker to release an update for your Android phone.)

Sources state the next Android release will be codenamed Froyo where this new implementation will take effect which will be followed by codename gingerbread.

This is a huge milestone for Android users, which will tear down the roadblocks of waiting for Handset makers and Carriers to release new updates. This will also help developers not have to pick and choose the flavor of Android OS for applications.

"While a pricing plan has not yet been determined for Nexus One, we are confident that it will be consistent with Sprint's commitment to deliver more value than our competitors and keep pricing simple," Adib said. "Right now, our Sprint Everything Data 450 plan with Any Mobile, Anytime(SM) gives customers unlimited calling with any mobile phone in America, unlimited text and unlimited Web for just $69.99 per month - the same price AT&T and Verizon charge for just unlimited talk.
