Rooting the Samsung Moment with the Official 2.1 Update from Sprint
Installing the ROM (Requirements for Root Access):
Use the Original Spint Update Tool for CL14.
If you do not have it, It can be Downloaded Here: SamsungMomentUpdater-CL14.exe
Download this ROM SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar
- This is the Official Android 2.1 DE03 with joeykrim SDX recovery 2.1.3 included
The joeykrim recovery is what allows root access to be applied to your phone.
Download joeykrim root version 7
- This applies Root Access to the Phone.
Directions
Put the SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar into the binary folder of the Sprint Update Tool. (Make sure no other files in the Binary folder!)
Run the Sprint Update Tool which will flash the phone. For more detail on the Sprint Update Tool, please refer to flashing the DD03 Beta Instructions.
This will give you full Android 2.1 DE03 and an SDX custom recovery of your choice!
Once you have installed the ROM using the SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar file make sure you phone boots up and operational the inital boot may take a few minutes longer than normal.
Load the joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root.zip onto the sdcard. Use either mount to USB and copy from host computer or mount /sdcard and adb push.
(I personally recommend mounting through USB and copying the file to the root of the SDcard if you want to use the ADB way see below)
Details for ADB:
- Double check sdcard is mounted. Sdcard Options -> Mount to /sdcard
- adb push c:\android\joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root-v6.zip /sdcard/
Next turn off your phone.
Reboot into recovery - holding vol down + talk + end through the SDX boot screen until the Recovery UI appears.
IF THE TOP OF THE RECOVERY SCREEN DOESN'T SAYS SDX, you're not using joeykrim recovery 2.1.3. If your screen doesn't say SDX you can find help here from SDX developers joeykrim recovery thread
Select Apply Update .zip from Menu
Select joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root-v7.zip
Apply and Reboot
After Installation of Root:
To see if it worked, download ConnectBot from the Market.
- In connectbot, choose "Local" from the dropdown menu on the bottom left.
- A command prompt window will open. Type in "su" and press enter.
- The $ will turn into a #. If it didn't turn into a #, repeat the installation process.
*Note ADB (USB debugging) is turned off by default in Android 2.1. Turn it back on and you'll also have root in adb shell.
