Android Hacks

So recently I got pretty bored with the look and feel of my android and I decided to spice it up. So I headed on over to SDX Developers and I was pleasantly surprised by the Custom ROM generator they have on the site. It does require an installation of Joeykrims Recovery 2.1.3. Which can be found here. You can flash this tar file the same way you flashed the beta 2.1 ROM. For more instructions please visit  http://www.dreamingisdigital.com/android/hacks/89-android-21-for-the-samsung-moment.html the only difference is to use the tar file downloaded above. The great thing is once you install the recovery file no need to use the Samsung flasher to install the custom ROM's you just boot into recovery mode and install the zip from the sdcard.

Custom ROM installation on the Samsung Moment.

Requirements:

SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar
SamsungMoment_Update-CL14.exe

or the patch if you want to use the new Samsung updater which can be found
SDX Samsung Updater Patch.exe

Able to point and click a mouse.

Instructions:

Once the Recovery 2.1.3 is installed.

Go to http://www.sdx-downloads.com/custom/

Just select your modules, applications and themes.

Copy to the Custom-SDX-Update.

Reboot the phone in recovery by holding down on the bottom volume control and hold talk and end buttons.

Select apply zip.

and thats it.

Rooting the Samsung Moment with the Official 2.1 Update from Sprint

Installing the ROM (Requirements for Root Access):

Use the Original Spint Update Tool for CL14.
If you do not have it, It can be Downloaded Here: SamsungMomentUpdater-CL14.exe

Download this ROM SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar

  • This is the Official Android 2.1 DE03 with joeykrim SDX recovery 2.1.3 included
The joeykrim recovery is what allows root access to be applied to your phone.

Download joeykrim root version 7

  • This applies Root Access to the Phone.

Directions

Put the SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar into the binary folder of the Sprint Update Tool. (Make sure no other files in the Binary folder!)

Run the Sprint Update Tool which will flash the phone. For more detail on the Sprint Update Tool, please refer to flashing the DD03 Beta Instructions.

This will give you full Android 2.1 DE03 and an SDX custom recovery of your choice!

Once you have installed the ROM using the SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1-joeykrim-recovery-2.1.3.tar file make sure you phone boots up and operational the inital boot may take a few minutes longer than normal.

Load the joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root.zip onto the sdcard. Use either mount to USB and copy from host computer or mount /sdcard and adb push.
(I personally recommend mounting through USB and copying the file to the root of the SDcard if you want to use the ADB way see below)

Details for ADB:

  1. Double check sdcard is mounted. Sdcard Options -> Mount to /sdcard
  2. adb push c:\android\joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root-v6.zip /sdcard/

Next turn off your phone.

Reboot into recovery - holding vol down + talk + end through the SDX boot screen until the Recovery UI appears.

IF THE TOP OF THE RECOVERY SCREEN DOESN'T SAYS SDX, you're not using joeykrim recovery 2.1.3.  If your screen doesn't say SDX you can find help here from SDX developers joeykrim recovery thread

Select Apply Update .zip from Menu

Select joeykrim-SDX-a2.1-root-v7.zip

Apply and Reboot

After Installation of Root:

To see if it worked, download ConnectBot from the Market.

  • In connectbot, choose "Local" from the dropdown menu on the bottom left.
  • A command prompt window will open.  Type in "su" and press enter.
  • The $ will turn into a #.  If it didn't turn into a #, repeat the installation process.

*Note ADB (USB debugging) is turned off by default in Android 2.1. Turn it back on and you'll also have root in adb shell.

How to get Protected Apps on the Android Market

The guys at sdx-developers do it again.
Now you have the Android 2.1 OS you want to beable to download those apps you paid for but they are not showing up in the market.
Well here is the Soultion.

(must have root).
You can still see all Android 1.6+ apps in the Market because build.prop specifies the following:
ro.build.version.sdk=7
Works on DD03 & DD10

Procedure is as follows:

  1. VERY IMPORTANT - back up your original build.prop from either "adb shell" or terminal on phone type the following (followed by enter):
    cat /system/build.prop > /sdcard/build.prop.bak

  2. Download the appropriate build.prop (attached at bottom) and rename from "ddxx.build.prop" to "build.prop"
Or you can modify your own (lines modified below - not sure if all are necessary)

    # ro.build.host=sep-19
    ro.build.host=Fortune
    # ro.build.tags=test-keys
    ro.build.tags=ota-rel-keys,test-keys
    ...
    # Do not try to parse ro.build.description or .fingerprint
    # ro.build.description=SPH-M900-user 2.1-update1 ECLAIR DD03 release-keys
    ro.build.description=SPH-M900-user 1.5 CUPCAKE CL14 ota-rel-keys,release-keys
    # ro.build.fingerprint=Samsung/SPH-M900/SPH-M900/SPH-M900:2.1-update1/ECLAIR/DD03:user/release-keys
    ro.build.fingerprint=Samsung/SPH-M900/SPH-M900/SPH-M900:1.5/CUPCAKE/CL14:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys

  3. Place build.prop in root of sdcard (either adb push or connect usb)

  4. Enter the following lines either from adb shell or terminal on phone:

    $ su
    # mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/stl5 /system
    # cd sdcard
    # busybox cp -R build.prop /system
    # mount -t rfs -o remount,ro /dev/stl5 /system
    # sync
    # reboot

  5. Once phone is completed booting, enter "Date & time" settings and set time to 11:59pm.  After time/date has changed to 12:00am (the next day), open Market and search for apps.

  6. Open "Date & time" settings and reselect Automatic

Samsung Moment 2.1

Complete this at your own risk. This is NOT an Official Sprint/Samsung release.

This is instructions on how to install a pre-release verison of the Android 2.1 OS for the Samsung Moment. A special thanks to http://www.sdx-developers.com for the information and ROMS.

Android 2.1 brings the moment:

  • Faster and more responsive.
  • Built-in VPN.
  • Bluetooth software enhanced.
  • Slide function to answer a call.
  • SMS voice input
  • Accepts unsigned emails now.

File Requirements:

System Requirements:

  • Your computer is running one of these systems:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4
    • Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or better
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows 7
  • Your Moment has a fully-charged battery
  • You have the USB data cable that came with your Moment

Information:

  • SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL.tar located in the Moment_2.1.7z has the newer kernel build
  • Both versions have been flashed and tested, Just like with the CL14 update all your settings and data will be wiped off the device

Installation:

  • Use 7zip to extract the SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL.tar and SPH-M900_MR2_DC23_REL.tar files from Moment_2.1.7z
  • Copy SPH-M900_MR2_DD03_REL.tar into the Sprint Update Tool binary folder.
    • Default path to binary folder - C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary
    • Make sure no other files are in the Binary folder except the DD03.tar
  • Now run the Samsung Moment updater the same as you did for the CL14 version.
  • From this point, you can follow the directions on each screen. Please note the following:
    • You will now see a warning screen that data not synchronized will be deleted. It is important that you back up your data before moving forward.
      • Note: If you have signed in to a Gmail account and allowed the synchronization with Gmail to continue, the following items will be restored once you sign back in to your Gmail account:
        • Google Contacts
        • Google Calendar
        • Purchased applications can be re-downloaded
        • Google emails
      • The SD card is NOT erased during the upgrade process. The following items are stored on the SD card:
        • Music
        • Moves and Videos
        • Pictures
        • Some application data (not all depends on application)
        • Saved email attachments
    • When you are instructed to simultaneously press and hold the Volume Down, Camera and End keys (download mode), it is important that you press the END button LAST, as this makes sure the phone does not turn on before the other two buttons are pressed. If you see the Samsung logo when you do this, you will need to pull the battery and try it again.
    • Once the Flash Programming is complete, your Moment will reboot and start hands-free activation.
